R&D PROJECTS

This section presents some selected externally funded research projects of the past 10 years

ACTIVE PROJECTS

FORESIGHT

(H2020-SU-DS-2018-2019-2020 - Active)

The FORESIGHT project https://foresight-h2020.eu aims to develop a federated cyber-range solution to enhance the preparedness of cybersecurity professionals at all levels and advance their skills towards preventing, detectingreacting and mitigating sophisticated cyber-attacks.

This is achieved by delivering an ecosystem of networked realistic training and simulation platforms that collaboratively bring unique cyber-security aspects from the aviation, smart grid and naval domains.

The proposed platform will allow the creation of complex cross-domain/hybrid scenarios to be built jointly with the IoT domain.

Emphasis is given on the design and implementation of realistic and dynamic scenarios that are based on identified and forecasted trends of cyberattacks and vulnerabilities extracted from cyber-threat intelligence gathered from the dark web; this will enable cybersecurity professionals to rapidly adapt to an evolving threat landscape.

i-LocON

(Research Promotion Foundation - Active)

The scope of the project is to develop a cellular platform that will be able to intelligently localise cellular handsets in indoor and outdoor environments.

The project will develop the related hardware platform and the localisation algorithms that will be applied to localise the cellular handsets.

The system aims to be used by search and rescue operators to locate users in distress.

SWITCH

(Research Promotion Foundation - Active)

The scope of the project is to implement, and experimentally assess, an entirely novel receiver topology for Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT).

The project also investigates fundamental research problems related to the deployment of Wireless Powered Sensor Networks (WPSNs) and especially the transmitter’s desired characteristics.

RF-META

(Research Promotion Foundation - Active)

The overall objective of the proposed project RF-META is to establish a new, distinct research Centre that will enable research to be conducted in the emerging fields of wireless and photonic communications (including 5G networks and beyond), broadband satellite communications, radar imaging systems, and sensing applications.

INSTANT

(Research Promotion Foundation - Active)

The scope of the INSTANT project is to develop an intelligent ICT Platform that will offer job matching capabilities, interactive migration information guidance, live communication and interaction, and multiple user facilitation for the hotelier business.

INSTANT will also develop a learning space to facilitate online trainings with a synchronous and an asynchronous component.

SENTINEL

(Digital Security Authority - Active)

The scope of the project is to investigate holistically how critical or other infrastructures and organisations can be protected through appropriate cybersecurity / cyber defense systems, and through training activities based on Cyber Range platforms

COMPLETED PROJECTS

ACTRESS

(Research Promotion Foundation - Completed)

The scope of the project is to provide methods for real-time end-to-end systems that dynamically adapt to time-varying channel states and end-user equipment, while maximizing video quality or guaranteeing a minimum acceptable level of video quality.

The approach is to seek a jointly optimum solution based on multi-objective optimization that maximizes video quality while minimizing bandwidth and encoding time.

CSRC

(Horizon 2020 - WIDESPREAD-01-2018-2019 Phase 1 - Completed)

The main goal of the proposed Teaming project is to establish a new Centre of Excellence (CoE), the first of its kind in Cyprus.

The CSRC will conduct interdisciplinary research on fostering awareness, appreciation, and engagement with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) topics through the use of digital technologies and innovative learning approaches.

LocME

(Research Promotion Foundation-Completed)

The LocME Project aims to develop/evolve wireless based localization methods, by combining the signal information provided by multiple heterogeneous wireless systems.

The proposed work is expected to simulate the overall existence of a heterogeneous network and identify the accuracy improvement that can be achieved when combining information from these different networks.

UPI

(Research Promotion Foundation -Completed)

The scope of the UPI project is to examine User Positioning algorithms in Indoor Environments.

The project investigates and combines timing and RSSI methods in an effort to alleviate location estimation inaccuracies, introduced by multipath effects influencing RSSI measurements.
